Stories of War and its Other

Performance art about war and personal discovery.

On Saturday, August 27th, I did a short spoken word piece with Michael Emerson as part of Alice Lovelace's War and Peace "Performance Museum."

Our piece, Stories of War and its Other, was a meditation on my recollections, as a young kid, on the end of the Vietnam War--and not being drafted into this ancient rite of passage (mostly for men); and Michael, who served in that horrific adventure in Southeast Asia, and his experience in helping "mop up" Little Five Points in the mid eighties, which was riddled with Skin Head violence and intimidation.

The Re-union

Video art dissolves into painting.

Working to grow an artistic process and project begun by Priscilla Smith and Ed Wenzer, I've made video that is projected on a large wall above Underground Atlanta for the project Elevate, curated by the Office of Cultural Affairs. We shot video of three brief moments in the Five Points Marta Station adjacent to Underground Atlanta. The video is projected on the wall, and occasionally paused. In the pauses, Ed paints elements from the video, creating a composite that evolved over time and is distilled in the singularity of paint, by day. At night, the painting and the video will dilate between becoming, stillness, and release. The painting will begin on Tuesday, as performance, and go on for two weeks.
